About the Hideaway Park Playground
The new playground at Hideaway Park was opened in 2026 and features custom playground equipment. The Town Council's decision to feature custom equipment was made to reflect and celebrate Winter Park's unique history and culture. Learn about the history of Winter Park that inspired the new play structure!
Moffat Tunnel and Parry Peak
The largest piece of the new play structure features two iconic elements that make up Winter Park: Moffat Tunnel and Parry Peak.
Moffat Tunnel
Today, the Moffat Tunnel stands as one of Colorado's most celebrated landmarks, with its West Portal sitting right at the base of Winter Park Resort. When opened in 1928, the Moffat Tunnel gave Winter Park a direct link across the Divide, connecting our town to Denver and beyond to Salt Lake City. This transformed our isolated mountain outpost into an accessible destination.
The tunnel has seen continuous rail use since opening and even played a role in national defense, with more than 30 military trains rushing through daily during World War II. As Winter Park approaches the tunnel's 100th anniversary on February 26, 2028, the site remains a defining piece of the town's identity. It serves as a symbol of the engineering ambition that first opened these mountains to the world, and still carries Amtrak's California Zephyr past Winter Park's doorstep every day.

Parry Peak
Parry Peak serves as a mountaineering landmark in Winter Park. Rising 13,397 feet on the Continental Divide southeast of Winter Park in the Arapaho National Forest. Locally, the mountain can be seen while skiing and is commonly known as “The Bear Claw.” The Moffat Tunnel traverses beneath the northern end of this mountain group, with its western portal sitting just behind the Winter Park ski area’s base lodge, which ties Parry Peak directly into the story of the tunnel and the town’s history.
Honoring Winter Park
Beyond the large slide structure, other elements of the playground are also nods to the values of the Winter Park community. The bear climbing structure is meant to represent our town’s appreciation for nature and the respect we have for the wildlife around us. The paths up the play structure are color-coded similarly to ski runs, with the black route being the most challenging for children to climb.
