We know Colorado has experienced a lot of rainy days this year, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods regarding fire danger. Humans are the biggest cause of wildfires (about 85% of all wildfires are human-caused each year in the US), so we need to exercise caution and be aware of the local restrictions that can change quickly.
Check Local Restrictions
The Town of Winter Park is located within Grand County, which means we operate under the fire restrictions implemented by the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office monitors fire conditions and the need for restrictions, along with help from federal partners and local fire districts. Campfire Safety
We love camping near Winter Park! With clear and starry skies at night and views of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains during the day, it’s the perfect place to spend a few days in nature, breathing fresh mountain air.
Here are a few tips if you choose to have a campfire while camping (if permitted by local fire restrictions).
- Fully extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the area. Burn all wood to ash and use lots of water to douse the fire.
- Use existing fire rings, made of either rocks or metal, to protect the ground from heat and keep your fire small.
- Check if gathering firewood is allowed. Whether gathering sticks and logs or purchasing a bundle, obtain fuel from near your campsite to avoid spreading invasive insects that can live in the wood.
Burning Debris
The burn season in Grand County is currently closed. Grand County allows large-scale burning during the winter months only and only during favorable air quality conditions. Find more information about slash burning here.
